Marinas & Boaters Spill Kit

According to the EPA, the biggest obstacle to an effective Spill Prevention Plan is the implementation. When marinas, boatyards and individual boaters have a spill prevention plan in place, they can modify this plan by receiving the most up-to-date information and product information available that will inform them on the process to avoid the dangerous release of oil into our water.

To prevent the release of substances into our waterways, it is imperative that Marina personnel are in possession of spill kit products, and processes to clean up and dispose of these substances in a specific manner and under specific guidelines.

Several clean marina initiatives offer helpful tips and information for the control of petroleum, fueling, bilge maintenance and spill response. These tips are intended to provide information that will help boatyards as well as boaters reduce pollution.

These tips are important because oil, fuel, and other petroleum hydrocarbons are hazardous by products produced by boats. Oil is harmful to plants, fish and wildlife. When Oil enters the water, it also effects the drinking water.

To prevent these dangerous spills, follow these preventitive tips:

Control Oil in the Bilge
*Place oil absorbent pads or a bioremediation bilge boom in the bilge to catch oil
*Use an oil absorbent pad under the engine
*Check the oil absorbent materials regularly. Replace these materials when heavily soiled or saturated. *Change the absorbents annually
*Keep the engine of your boat tune up - If there are any leaking seals or gaskets get them replaced
*Change the filters often

Oil absorbent booms are perfect for marine and industrial spill containment. These oil booms are constructed with a strong mesh outer skin encasing highly absorbent polypropylene filler. Oil only absorbent pads are great for absorbing oil on water or for outside applications.

Spill Containment
*If a spill occurs, wipe it with an absorbent
*Never hose down a spill with water
*If the fuel does enter the water - Do not use soap or dish detergent to disperse it (Detergents aggravate the problem. Adding dish detergent to a spill is against federal law). Use an oil only absorbent.
*If the spill occurs in a marina, you must notify the management immediately.

When spills occur in a marina, quick action is required. Some products that are specifically geared toward the marine industry include:

Oil only spill kits are available in 5 to 95 gallon capacity. The 5-gallon bucket spill kit is specifically designed for portability and for containing all types of liquid spills. This kit provides spill control material and empty containers for emergency clean up.

The largest spill kit is the 95 Gallon Drum over pack Spill Kit that comes complete with everything to clean-up spills as large as 82 gallons. The 95 Gallon Drum Over pack Spill Kit assists in complying with HAZWOPER Regulation 29 CFR 1910.120.

The marine industries including marinas, boatyards, marine retailers and boaters must make a commitment to improving the health and cleanliness of our waterways. There is a direct link between the strict adherence to the statues that keep our waters safe and the future of the industries that rely on the safety of our waterways for their income.
